Solving the Problem

I have selected opening up a community coffee shop on Johns Island. The coffee shop will serve as a locally sourced and engaged business that focuses on being involved in the local area. The products we will sell as our primary revenue drivers will be coffees and pastries. We will serve a variety of light, medium, and bold coffee roasts as well as espresso drinks. The beans will be premium sourced options and locally roasted. We will make our own pastries consisting of muffins, scones, breakfast sandwiches, and more.

Another revenue driver we will offer will be utilizing our space as an event space. We will offer the roasting area to groups and local business groups as a meeting space for an affordable rate or a guarantee of an amount of coffee purchases.

We will host a poetry night, a local artist night, and a jazz or acoustic musician 1 night a week to help bring the community together. Through this we will also offer teas and decaf coffee options to the individuals coming in on these nights.

  1. Hi Alan. The idea of a community coffee shop sounds like a great opportunity. The local focus of the shop would really foster community among area residents. The selection of coffees you proposed should satisfy the needs of a variety of potential clients. The dual use as an event space is sure to bring more potential customers to the coffee shop in addition to the fees people pay to use the venue.

  2. In Miami, my friends restaurant hosts local bands that play every couple of days. It brings an authenticity to the place that attracts local people. Your idea of having poetry night and musicians coming over provides a platform for artists, and people will appreciate that and show it by coming to the coffee shop more often.

  3. Shalom again Alan, your multi-front idea is exemplary of what professor has taught us. Not only are you bringing great coffee to Johns Island, you are bringing culture. And yes, Alan, great coffee can get you a local reputation, but culture can bring you a national reputation. Similar to how people go to Nashville because it's known for Country music and also as the "Music City", you would be giving Johns Island another type of culture that will attract different people to the are. Again, I love the idea. Make the moves!

  4. Alan, this seems like a good project and one that you have already been brainstorming or putting into action. I would love to hear your thoughts on the disadvantages of having a physical business. I will keep an eye on your future posts for that!
